Our Development Journey – 21 Years

20 year anniversary open day

24th June 2025 marked 21 years of Red Deer Village, the over 50’s retirement village in Glasgow, Scotland. This year, the British Holiday and Home Park Association also commemorates their 75th anniversary. To celebrate, they launched a “Then and Now” campaign, for parks to reflect on their development journeys over the years.  So, it’s perfect timing to cast our minds back and take a stroll down memory lane! Red Deer Village was a dream inspired by two brothers’ travels through America, Australia, and Canada. Glasgow-born John and Ivan Hendry were inspired by the high-quality, luxury parks they had seen overseas. In 2004, the family took ownership of Craigendmuir Caravan Park to begin the long process of bringing these ideas to life in their homeland of Scotland. In 2009, Craigendmuir Caravan Park’s name was changed to Red Deer Village to signify the changes to come.

Laying the Foundations

The journey to transform the former residential and holiday was a lengthy one, with development continuing to this day. Phase 1 of the five-part development journey aimed at creating the visionary residential park seen today. This involved extensive preparation to build the core infrastructure. The initial groundwork included clearing the site and installing new roads, water, electricity, mains gas, and street lighting. Once completed, the first plots were laid. In 2010, the first Red Deer Village residential park home was installed, marking the start of the vibrant, gated retirement community present today.

Planting the Seeds

Phases 2 and 3 marked a significant step forward in the community’s growth. This transformed open land into beautifully designed residential areas that reflect the village’s commitment to quality and sustainability. Phase 2 introduced Cedar Crescent, a collection of residential park homes developed with the David Bellamy Conservation Scheme in mind. As always, Red Deer Village concentrated on protecting the woodland and wildflower habitats that are so important to the park’s wildlife. Phase 3 followed, with the expansion of Deer Ridge Drive and the creation of Maple Crescent. This brought larger plots, premium home models and enhanced infrastructure, including tarmac roads and modern landscaping. Together, these phases have elevated the standard of living at Red Deer Village while preserving its connection to conservation.

Nurturing Nature and Neighbourhood

From the very beginning, Red Deer Village has undertook development in a way that respects and protects the natural environment. Collaboration with the David Bellamy Conservation Scheme has helped achieve this by focusing on preserving existing woodland and carefully adding new planting to support local wildlife. Thanks to these ongoing efforts, the village is surrounded by green spaces where nature and community peacefully coexist. The commitment to sustainable development has been recognised through several awards. It remains important to continue growing the village thoughtfully, maintaining a balance between development and the natural landscape.

Cultivating Connections

One of the most significant milestones in Red Deer Village’s development journey has been the creation of the community hub in 2017. What was once a run-down, small, stone building, has now been replaced by a new, welcoming space. Residents come together to socialise, participate in activities, and build friendships. The Hub reflects the village’s commitment to fostering a strong sense of community alongside quality living. From its early days as just a vision, the hub now stands as a vibrant centre of daily life. This proves how thoughtful development continues to enhance both the social and physical landscape of Red Deer Village.

Rooted in Community

The residents have always been at the heart of Red Deer Village’s story. From the early days when the first homes were installed to the thriving community it is today, they have helped shape the village into more than just a place to live. It has become a true home. Many residents express how the peaceful surroundings and friendly neighbours make all the difference. As one resident recently said, “Moving here was the best decision I’ve ever made — it’s not just where I live, it’s where I belong.” Their ongoing support and connection continue to inspire the village’s growth and development, ensuring Red Deer remains a welcoming and vibrant community well into the future.

Growing a Legacy

Whilst John and Ivan set out to create a safe, high-quality way of life for people over 50 years of age in Scotland, the aim was also to develop a heritage for their family. The Hendry family values are exemplified throughout Red Deer Village. In one form or another, the brothers’ children, wives, and sister, have played key roles in the expansion of the community that stands today. For instance, Ashleigh, John and Ivan’s sister, mastered her interior design skills to dress the new residential park homes for sale.  Elizabeth, John’s daughter, has now taken over the role, while also managing the park’s reception and performing various administrative tasks. Leah Louise, John’s eldest daughter, manages the day-to-day operations and marketing of the park. The family’s shared commitment continues to shape Red Deer Village into a lasting home for generations to come.
