Donations to Refugees and Homeless

Red Deer Village would like to thank everyone who contributed to our Ukraine appeal. When trying to drop off our items, we found it very difficult to find a charity to accept anything we had to offer. Many charities have been overwhelmed recently by the generosity of donations and are now no longer transporting items to Ukraine. Even charities that had previously advertised how and where to donate are no longer doing so, unless they are cash. This was a bit late to find out after we had filled an entire cupboard with items!
So we had to do some research. We finally managed to find 2 places that would accept our donations of clothing, blankets and toiletries. These were Maslow’s Community Shop and Starter Packs Glasgow, both based in Govan.
Maslow’s Community Shop
Maslow’s is a second hand goods shop run by volunteers. They provide free clothing and household goods to asylum seekers and refugees, as well as people in the local area experiencing hardship. They can do this thanks to donations received, and through items sold in their charity shop. Every so often, they request specific items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and socks. Maslow’s also gives back to their community, by offering free English classes to those trying to improve their skills.
Starter Packs Glasgow
Starter Packs have been around for over 20 years. Their aim is to alleviate poverty and break the cycle of homelessness. The charity provides packs of essential items to those starting a new tenancy after referral, often after being homeless, fleeing domestic situations or moving on from care, prison or the forces. Items that they look for include towels, duvets, blankets and toiletries. They also have 2 charity shops, The Magpie’s Nest and The Magpie’s Eye.
Donations
Red Deer Village prides itself on its charitable work and aims to help any cause in the community that it can. We have a charity box in our office that rotates monthly, as well as a Barnardo’s box in our holiday park office year round. We also donate annually to the Salvation Army at our Christmas lights switch-on with £250 worth of Christmas present donations.
