Gardening Tips for Summer

At Red Deer Village, each residential park home comes with its own manageable garden; providing our residents with the perfect amount of space to create a garden that’s unique to them. It’s great to see what everyone does with their space and how their floral arrangements brighten up their homes. Many of our over 50’s village residents have told us how much they’ve appreciated having their own gardens to tend to during the lockdown and the joy they’ve felt looking out on to our immaculate communal grounds.

Whilst travel remains restricted and our residents continue to spend much of their time at home, we think it’s the perfect time to work on a summer garden project. Here we outline some of our top tips to bring colour to summer gardens and the steps that can be taken to ensure flowers thrive!

Water, Water, Water!

It may seem like an obvious one, but watering your plants is twice as important as the weather warms up (slightly)! Your garden will need a big drink during the week, possibly even twice if the weather really heats up. Containers and hanging baskets should be done once a day to help the plants flourish and keep them hydrated.

Why not buy yourself a colourful watering can and use it as another way to brighten up the place?

Look out for pests

You won’t be the only one enjoying the warmer weather – keep an eye out for different kinds of garden pests such as greenfly, blackfly and caterpillars! If you catch these garden pests early enough it’s quite often easy enough to deal with, however, if the are left they can easily destroy plants. A quick check of your plants while you’re watering them is more than enough!

Plan Ahead

Although we all hope for sunny, warm weather, unfortunately, we don’t always get it! Rain and frost can quickly set in overnight. It’s good to be prepared for such situations by keeping an eye on the weather forecast and taking your tender plants indoors on cold nights.

Planning ahead will ensure that you are always prepared for when bad weather strikes!

Just Keep Mowing

Keeping your grass freshly cut makes your entire garden look more put together. The trick with mowing is to do it little and often – about once a week should do it.

Once you’re done with your grass clippings why not add them to a compost heap?

Add Colour!

Have a look at your garden and decide what plants you want to take into the Summer, some may be past their best. Remove the blooms that are a little spent, and add something with a little more colour. Some of our favourite Summer flowers include sunflowers, periwinkles and marigolds!

Also, make sure to take the time to remove any weeds and give yourself a tidy space to start with
