reasons to retire to Glasgow

The beautiful backdrop of Scotland is a wonderful place to choose to spend your retirement. A country rich in culture, history and scenery will keep you busy exploring for years to come. That’s just why Red Deer Village, the over 50’s retirement community, chose to develop its vision in the wonderful city of Glasgow. We are close enough to the vibrant city to allow easy access, whilst also based in a quiet, tranquil town only 5 miles away. Below, Red Deer Village takes a look at 3 reasons to retire to Glasgow.

Beautiful Scenery

Scotland is renowned for its stunning countryside scenery. This can also be found in and around Glasgow. Whether you want to travel slightly further out and visit some natural beauty spots, or take advantage of the wonderful parks Glasgow has to offer. Kelvingrove Park, Pollock Park, Queen’s Park and Glasgow Botanic Gardens are all within easy reach of Red Deer Village.

However, within even easier access to our retirement village is Hogganfield Loch, Frankfield Loch, Seven Lochs Wetland Park and the Cardowan Moss nature reserve. All are within walking distance, and make a lovely day out to get some fresh air and your steps in.

There are many health benefits of walking in your retirement, physically and mentally. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll or you find an interesting hike, Glasgow has plenty to offer.

Things to Do and See

There is plenty of history and art to see in Glasgow. The local bus stop and train station are only a 15 minute walk from Red Deer Village. Take the train into the city to explore the amazing Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Riverside Museum or the Gallery of Modern Art. Or you can catch a show at one of Glasgow’s many theatres, or see a concert at the Ovo Hydro, where some of the biggest names in comedy and music visit year round.

Red Deer Village has a courtesy minibus that will take residents for their weekly shopping twice a week. The bus also goes on a monthly outing to a destination of residents’ choice. So anywhere you may have in mind, just let us know! We’ve visited Edinburgh during the annual Fringe Festival and Christmas markets, as well as Helensburgh, Stirling, Blair Drummond Safari Park, Largs, Troon and Callander, amongst many more.

Many of our residents participate in clubs in the local community of Stepps. Some are through the local church, whereas others include the local bowls or ramblers groups. Red Deer Village also hosts events and activities for residents to take part in in our state of the art residents hub, such as a weekly knitting bee.

Lower Cost of Living

Glasgow has been considered one of the most affordable places to live in the UK. This takes into account things like cost of transport and groceries. Many move to a residential park home to free up equity tied up in a large family home. This can then be spent enjoying retirement. With park homes in Scotland and the UK well insulated, owners typically find their gas and electricity bills reduced – another benefit of park home living.

There are many reasons to retire to Glasgow. Easy transport and access to and from the city, a community of like-minded neighbours in a retirement village and plentiful opportunities to get outside and enjoy the scenery and exercise.
