Retirement in Scotland

Residential park home in Scotland

If you’ve hit retirement age and are researching how to spend your golden years, you’ll find a lot of different options out there. Red Deer Village, of course, is a big advocate for retirement villages. The park boasts like-minded neighbours, a secure, gated environment and high quality residential park homes.

Set on the outskirts of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, Red Deer Village is ideally located for those looking to enjoy retirement and semi-retirement, whilst freeing up equity tied in large family homes. But let’s say you’re not even at that stage yet. The world is your oyster after all – you could spend your retirement anywhere. So why retire in Scotland? We take a look at just a couple reasons below, to help you along with your decision making.

Scottish Surroundings

Many people choose to retire to Scotland, even if they’re not originally from the area. There’s plenty of culture and history to explore, including museums, castles, galleries and landmarks. And activities for those who love the outdoors are far from limited. Try your hand or practice your skills in hiking, fishing or golfing. The nightlife in Scotland, particularly Glasgow city, is always thriving, with many pubs, restaurants and theatres. If you simply want a relaxing retirement, Scotland has some marvellous natural scenery to sample, particularly its’ greenery, lochs and coastal areas.

Red Deer Village is within easy reach of some of Scotland’s most popular cities. Glasgow is only a 20 minute drive or train away, but Edinburgh, Stirling and Loch Lomond are also close by.

In the immediate vicinity of Red Deer, you’ll find all of the local amenities you could need. The town of Stepps has its own convenience store, beautician, hairdresser, gym, butcher, dog groomer, doctor, dentist, pharmacy and 2 lochs, either for simply admiring or getting your steps in.

Retirement Scotland

Socialising during retirement

When moving home, from near of far, you want to know that you’ll be able to make new friends wherever you are. Scotland is well known for being a friendly country. At Red Deer Village, we consider ourselves an exclusive option for the over 50s’ community. We’ve attracted residents from all over the world, including places as far as Italy, South Africa and Texas.

We have a residential hub for our villagers to enjoy tea or a coffee with friends and neighbours. There’s also, at minimum, 2 events held a month, to give neighbours a chance to get together. Plus, our courtesy shuttle bus takes residents for their weekly shopping and on a monthly outing to a destination of their choice. This helps you to build a strong social network in your retirement, with whom to try all those new activities you’ve found to do in Scotland!

Other than within Red Deer Village, you can meet new friends by getting out and exploring, just as you would anywhere. This could mean checking out local events, joining clubs, volunteering or skill classes and workshops.

Using the digital world is also a great way to meet people. V For Life, for example, a charity donated to vegans and vegetarians over 50, offer a pen- and phone- pal scheme. They’ll distribute the information you share with other members of the scheme, so people can reach out to members with similar interests. It’s a great way to find peers who share your hobbies or mindset and make new friends digitally.
