Christmas lights switch on - winter news 2023

As always, there’s plenty going on at Red Deer Village, the over 50s residential retirement park in Stepps, Glasgow. There’s been charity events, new staff, retiring staff, and of course, the epic annual Christmas lights switch on! So below are the highlights of our winter news update for 2023.

Christmas Lights Switch-on

Thank you to everyone who came to the Christmas lights switch-on on Friday 1, December. We hope everyone enjoys the park lit up for the festive season. We also hope everyone enjoys the new decorations around the park. These include a sleigh, deer, train and a new teddy! We were delighted to welcome special guest, Santa Claus, to the lights switch-on this year, and we hope everyone enjoyed bringing their grandkids to meet him. Christmas Present Donation to Fare Scotland

As tradition, we donated our Christmas presents to be distributed to kids in the local area who otherwise may not get a gift. We donated £300 worth of presents to Fare Scotland on 1 December. We also received many donations from residents, so thank you to everyone who participated.

Christmas Lights Competition

We are blown away this year by everyone’s Christmas lights efforts! There were some excellent contenders, and it was almost too difficult to choose! After careful consideration, the winner for this year’s Christmas lights competition is, for the third year in a row, Roseann Anderson in Cedar Crescent! We’d also like to give special mention to some other amazing efforts that caught our eye this year, pictured below.

Top Left & Middle – Roseann Anderson, Top Right – Elaine & Cliff Collins
Centre Left & Middle – Raymond & Margaret Williams, Centre Right – Ian & Ellen Morton
Bottom Left – Ann & Arthur Glen, Bottom Centre – Ian & Roseanne Connell, Bottom Right – Margaret & John Daly

We managed to raise £364.52. Red Deer Village donated an additional £300.00, bringing the total raised for Macmillan Cancer Support to £664.52. Thank you to everyone who donated, baked and participated, we couldn’t have done it without you all!

Thank you to everyone who donated. Our charity boxes sit at our coffee bar. We welcome donations from anyone enjoying a beverage in the hub.

Staff Update

Alistair’s last bus trip destination was to Clyde Valley at the end of November. We hope you all enjoyed the day out. Alistair will be retiring from Red Deer Village at the end of December. We thank Alistair for all of his support and faithful service over the last 8 years, and wish him a happy retirement.

Our new office manager, Veronica, started with us on Wednesday, 6 December. You may have seen her if you have visited the hub recently. We wish her the best of luck, and hope you will all make her feel very welcome.

Hub Events

The hub has recently held a quiz night in both October and November, and a cheese and wine night in October, to allow new residents to get to meet their neighbours, and old neighbours to have a catch up. Our next hub event will be the residents’ Christmas party on Saturday, 16 December.

MSP Visit

Our MSP, Fulton MacGregor, visited Red Deer Village lately to hand out some letters to residents. If he did not catch you, he left some spares at the hub in case anyone would like to collect one. We hope many of you managed to spot him to catch up on anything you might have had outstanding, or just to say hello!

Nature Spotting – Goldfinches

One of our residents, Sandra Wilson, took this excellent picture of goldfinches at her feeding station. We love to see wildlife around Red Deer Village’s retirement park. It helps to see that our David Bellamy Conservation Scheme efforts are paying off.
